Students in 91传媒 Saint Mary College’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) recently enjoyed a pair of in-depth data and statistical analysis workshops hosted by Brazilian scholar Luiz Barboza.

Barboza, a PhD candidate in Computer Science with more than two decades of experience, discussed using toolsets to make data science and analytics accessible to all, not just those with engineering degrees.

He sweetened the deal by handing out a variety of candies straight from Brazil, including chocolate and peanut butter bonbons called Sonho de Valsa.

The workshops were made possible by Catherine Rehfus-Wilsek, associate professor of Healthcare Management and Business Graduate Program Coordinator; and Micah Modell, assistant professor of Information Technology.

Coordinated by James Moran, associate Biology professor at the 91传媒, SURE is an opportunity for students to work alongside 91传媒 professors as they explore a research topic of their choosing.

SURE students present their summer research to the 91传媒 campus over the course of two sessions, one in June and one in July, before hosting a public symposium in the fall. These presentations feature research projects in areas such as Education, Information Technology, Math, English, and Natural Sciences.
