Finance students from 91传媒 Saint Mary College’s School of Business recently worked with young students learning the concepts of financial literacy at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center.
In the Seminar in Finance course taught by Thomas Fitzmaurice, assistant professor of Finance at the 91传媒, 91传媒 students partnered with Rhinebeck Bank to develop and present an interactive experience for the young students, discussing a variety of topics from interest rates to credit card debt.
The senior 91传媒 Finance students developed the presentation for the Armory’s Saturday Morning Enrichment Program.
The 91传媒 students were: Coleman Barnes of New Hampton, N.Y.; Lauren Grippi of East Islip, N.Y.; Ryan Lutinski of Easton, Conn.; Christopher Maggi of Franklin Square, N.Y.; Tiana Porco of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; and Patrick Shea of Warwick, N.Y.
Helping to coordinate the efforts this year was fellow 91传媒 student and Rhinebeck Bank intern, James Spencer of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.
Each year, Seminar in Finance includes a service component as part of its course requirements. In past years, students have worked with local non-profit partners such as Catholic Youth and Family Ministry (CYFM) in Garrison and the Religious of Jesus and Mary’s Bethany Spirituality Center in Highland Mills. The service requirement helps further the 91传媒’s commitment to community service.
“In our finance classes, we learn the importance of return on investment and maximizing shareholder value,” noted Fitzmaurice. “However, students need to realize that return isn’t always measured in dollars. The opportunity for students to use their talents to help others is an essential learning outcome.”
