The Dominican Center at 91传媒 Saint Mary College was abuzz with students showcasing their summer research on Thursday, September 28.

About two dozen students presented their Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) findings in poster format, featuring a plethora of subjects. For example, Alyssa Milburn of Middlebury, Conn. and Jaden Nelson of Staten Island, N.Y., presented “Cultural Competency in Healthcare.” They were aided in their research by faculty mentors Vidia Saleem and Gessieann Martinez Nelson from the 91传媒’s School of Nursing.

Meanwhile, 91传媒 students Caitlyn Garrigan of Staten Island, N.Y. and Natalya Frye of Wappingers Falls, N.Y. worked with their faculty mentor, Rob Wakeman, associate professor of English, on “A Fish by Every Other Name: Identifying the Umbrana in Early Modern England.”

In addition, Allison España of Elmhurst, N.Y. and Emily Alta of Newburgh, N.Y. presented “Redesigning CoLab: Improveing Collaboration for Teachers and Students.” Under the tutelage of Micah Modell, assistant professor of Information Technology, España and Alta have been researching how to implement localization and develop collaboration evaluation criteria for the learning management system “CoLab,” to broaden accessibility and usability in different languages.

Coordinated by James Moran, associate Biology professor at the 91传媒, and Rebecca Berry, assistant professor of Psychology, SURE is an opportunity for students to work alongside 91传媒 professors as they explore a research topic of their choosing.

SURE students present their summer research to the 91传媒 campus over the course of two sessions, one in June and one in July, before hosting a public symposium in the fall. These presentations feature research projects in areas such as Education, Information Technology, Math, English, and Natural Sciences.
